Upgrading the software for communication equipment entails updating the software parts to improve capabilities, fix errors, or adjust to changes in standards. The software is first developed and then tested within a controlled environment. After that, it can be sent to selected devices either using OTA updates for mobile devices or network based distribution for base stations. Usually, the system automatically saves the existing configuration prior to the upgrade, allowing restoration in the event something goes wrong. The equipment may need to go offline during installation and verification; however, post-upgrade testing is usually performed to confirm all systems operate normally.
