In a mobile communication network, BTS describes the interconnection schema for Base Transceiver Stations. In older systems, every BTS is connected to a base station controller (BSC) which controls several BTSs, manages mobile connection handoffs between transceivers, and supervises resource allocation. In 4G and 5G networks, the structure is much more distributed. BTSs can connect directly to the core network, or through intermediate nodes like DU (Distributed Unit) and CU (Centralized Unit). This change increases the operating efficiency of the network, as well as agility and the ability to grow in highly populated regions.
